Anatomy of Low back:

Consist of 5 vertebrae L1-L5

Muscles surrounding lower lumbar

Acute low back pain can occur due to sprains and strains of muscles and ligaments surrounding low back.  This can be caused by improper lifting, twisting, lifting something heavy, or overstretching.

Herniated or ruptured disc can occur due to improper posture when lifting heavy object.  Lifting something from the ground and twisting.  Bulging of the disc can cause radiculopathy in lower extremities.  Herniated disc can irritate spinal nerve root causing numbness, or tingling that travels.

A traumatic injury, such as from playing sports, car accidents, or a fall can injure tendons, ligaments or muscle resulting in low back pain. Traumatic injury may also cause the spine to become overly compressed, which in turn can cause an intervertebral disc to rupture or herniated, exerting pressure on any of the nerves rooted to the spinal cord. When spinal nerves become compressed and irritated, back pain and sciatica may result.
